Visit Garni to Explore the Real Armenia!


Garni Temple
Garni is a beautiful place in Armenia. Unit 1936, this place was known as Bash Gyarni and in Roman language it was elaborated as Garrni. This is an amazing village located at Armenia’s Kotayk Province. This village is also located 28km southeast to Yerevan.


History:

Garni as a beautiful village has a rich history. It was occupied for the first time during third millennium BC due to its defensible terrain which is easily visible at a bend of River Azat. During 8th century BC, Garni was first conquered by Argishti One, who was an Uratian King. During 3rd century BC, then fortification for Garni was started. This was commenced as the summer residence which was then used by the royal dynasties of Artaxiad and Orontid. And later, this fortress at Garni has become a refuge for the Armenian king known as Mithridates. At this fortress, the king and his family members were assassinated by his nephew and son in law Rhadamistus. However, the fortress was sacked by Timur Lenk in 1386. During the year 1679, a major earthquake struck Garni while devastating the temple and a big part of this area completely.

People and monuments:

Most of the people now living in Garni are descends of people lived here during 1829-30. It was the time when a population exchange has occurred for this part of the world. there are several landmarks and monuments located at Garni that make this place just perfect for those who are looking for an extreme tourism in Armenia. Among all these monuments Garni Temple, Mashtots Hayrapet Church and Surb Astvatsatsin Church are considered as the prime ones.
