Garni Temple

Garni is a beautiful place in Armenia. Unit 1936, this place was known as Bash Gyarni and in Roman language it was elaborated as Garrni. This is an amazing village located at Armenia’s Kotayk Province. This village is also located 28km southeast to Yerevan.

History:

The Havuts Tar Monastic Complex 

Garni as a beautiful village has a rich history. It was occupied for the first time during third millennium BC due to its defensible terrain which is easily visible at a bend of River Azat. During 8^th century BC, Garni was first conquered by Argishti One, who was an Uratian King. During 3^rd century BC, then fortification for Garni was started. This was commenced as the summer residence which was then used by the royal dynasties of Artaxiad and Orontid. And later, this fortress at Garni has become a refuge for the Armenian king known as Mithridates. At this fortress, the king and his family members were assassinated by his nephew and son in law Rhadamistus. However, the fortress was sacked by Timur Lenk in 1386. During the year 1679, a major earthquake struck Garni while devastating the temple and a big part of this area completely.
